"Without fiber you can't take online music lessons." Not true. A standard ADSL connection is enough in the vast majority of cases. The confusion comes from not distinguishing between bandwidth (how much information passes per second) and latency (how long it takes to get there): for online music lessons, bandwidth is what matters most, and fiber is not mandatory.
The real minimum numbers
To have a quality online music lesson with uwClassrooms, you need:
- Minimum upload: 0.2 Mbps (yes, you read that right: 200 kilobits per second)
- Recommended upload: 3-5 Mbps for Full HD video and 48 kHz stereo audio
- Download: any modern connection is more than enough
3-5 Mbps upload is a standard that any recent ADSL connection reaches, and that any FTTC connection (fiber to the cabinet) comfortably exceeds. Only very old ADSL connections (degraded phone lines, far from the exchange) can fall below this threshold, and even then the "audio-only" mode works perfectly well even at 0.2 Mbps.
Bandwidth vs latency: the classic confusion
Bandwidth is the "width of the pipe": how much data passes per second. Latency is the time a single piece of data takes to travel from you to the server and back (measured in milliseconds).
To play together in real time remotely you need extremely low latency (under 30 ms), which no home connection today reliably guarantees. For taking a lesson — where you play, the teacher listens, the teacher comments, you play again — standard internet latency (40-150 ms) is perfectly acceptable. Bandwidth is what determines whether the audio of your instrument arrives compressed and poor or rich and detailed.
Practical tests: 5 minutes to know if your connection is good enough
- Speed test. Go to speedtest.net on a computer (not on your phone), click "Go". Look at the upload value (that's what matters for lessons). If it's above 1 Mbps you're fine for HD video; above 0.3 Mbps you're fine for audio.
- Latency test (ping). Still on Speedtest, check the "ping" in milliseconds. Under 50 ms is excellent, under 100 ms is very good, under 150 ms is still fine for lessons.
- Stability test. Leave a 1080p YouTube video playing for 10 minutes while you do other things: if it doesn't stop to buffer, your connection is stable enough for a lesson.
What to do if the connection drops during the lesson
It happens: someone else at home is downloading a movie, a neighbor's router causes interference, a momentary network hiccup. Three concrete steps to try, in order:
- Ethernet cable to the computer instead of Wi-Fi. This is the single thing that improves lesson stability the most. A 5-meter cable costs about €8.
- Temporarily pause any downloads in progress (Dropbox, OneDrive, automatic updates, streaming on other devices at home).
- Move closer to the router if you're on Wi-Fi. Distance and walls are the main obstacle to wireless connection quality.
When fiber actually makes a difference
Fiber (FTTH, fiber to the home) is the best choice if you have several people at home working in video calls at the same time, if you upload large videos, or if you live in an area where ADSL is degraded. For a single student taking a single music lesson, a good ADSL or FTTC connection is enough.
Wi-Fi or cable? The rule professional teachers follow
Every teacher who has been giving online lessons for years — without exception — uses an ethernet cable, not Wi-Fi. Not because Wi-Fi doesn't work, but because every so often it does "something odd" (packet loss, interference, automatic re-authentication). For a single lesson you can live with it; for ten lessons a week it ruins your flow. Ethernet cable: €8, problem solved.

You don't need fiber to take online music lessons: a good ADSL connection with 1 Mbps upload is enough, and even 0.2 Mbps allows high-quality audio-only lessons. What really makes the difference is connection stability, which is maximized by using an ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi.
